Challinor Believes Blue Box Recycling Could Be Much Better
While Town of Milton Ward 2 Local Councillor John Challinor II supports the decision by the Government of Ontario to permit the consumer packaged goods industry to take over financial and operational responsibility for the Blue Box recycling system on January 1, 2026, he believes it could be a much better program if it also included public spaces recycling.
For six years (2010 – 2015), Challinor was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association, which operates what is now considered to be the most successful and least costly beverage container recycling program in North America. It is found in Manitoba, but Ontario could easily have it, too.
With 85,000 attractive recycling bins in place across Manitoba, which are 100% funded by beverage producers and provided at no charge for use in airports, arenas, beaches, businesses, campgrounds, parks, schools, sports fields, stadiums, streetscapes, tourist attractions, etc., Recycle Everywhere recently achieved its 75% diversion objective.
As the founding chairman, Mr. Challinor was invited back to Winnipeg recently to celebrate this achievement. He said during the rollout of the program in 2010 that it would meet its objective. Led by Executive Director Ken Friesen and current Chair Cheryl McLaughlin, CBCRA did exactly that.
Between 2008 and 2015, Mr. Challinor advocated to the Government of Ontario to introduce a public spaces recycling program as a complement to the Blue Box. He remains committed to meeting anytime with Ontario Minister of Environment, Conservation & Parks, the Honourable Todd McCarthy, to make the case for less litter, higher consumer packaged goods diversion from landfill and a stronger Blue Box in every municipality in Ontario — Recycle Everywhere!
