Challinor Calls For Action On Homelessness From Feds, Province
Town of Milton Ward 2 Councillor John Challinor II has called on the Governments of Canada and Ontario to take their legal responsibilities for homelessness and its root causes far more seriously than they have, so far.
Milton has had to contend with rising levels of homelessness this year with no financial support and no clear legal way of removing unsheltered people or encampments, even though local property taxpayers, local religious institutions and local donors are sending hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to the Regional Municipality of Halton and organizations like the Salvation Army to support and house the homeless.
“The senior levels of government need to revise the Mental Health Act, the Health Care Consent Act and the
Trespass to Property Act to address homelessness and its root causes — mental health, public safety and alcohol and drug addiction,” said Mr. Challinor. “Milton is a caring community and homelessness has no place here. The lack of focus by Ottawa and Queen’s Park, compounded by poor decisions by activist judges, is damaging our community’s reputation and, worse, destroying the social fabric of our province and, ultimately, our country.”

Mr. Challinor’s concerns came in the form of a motion that was seconded by Town of Milton Ward 1 Regional
