Challinor Successfully Encourages Consumer Fireworks Ban Consideration For Milton
Town of Milton staff will provide Milton Council with a bylaw later this year that bans the sale, distribution and letting off of consumer fireworks in Milton, as a result of a related motion brought forward to Town Hall by Ward 2 Local Councillor John Challinor II.
The motion was seconded by Ward 2 Regional and Local Councillor Rick Malboeuf. It was approved unanimously by members of Council.
Despite developing and approving a more stringent consumer fireworks bylaw two years ago, Town Bylaw Enforcement staff, Milton Fire Department staff and all members of Council continue to be inundated with an ever-increasing volume of complaints by Miltonians about the illegal setting off of consumer fireworks on public or private property.
Further, many of those same consumer fireworks have been let off one or more days prior to and following permitted celebrations, including Canada Day, Victoria Day, Diwali and Chinese Lunar New Year (Spring Festival).
The unexpected setting off of fireworks late at night can impact both
human beings and animals by damaging their hearing and creating emotional distress. And, unfortunately, physical injuries associated with letting off fireworks are on the increase across Canada in recent years because of poor safety training and practices. CR
