Challinor Requests Provincial, Federal Governments To Review Vehicle Exhaust Noise Levels
The public’s increasing frustration with excessive vehicle noise, compounded by the practical inability of police to ticket every offending car, truck or motorcycle, led Ward 2 Local Councillor John Challinor II to bring forward a motion to Milton Council requesting that the federal government and the province of Ontario review and ultimately lower their permitted decibel ratings for exhaust systems.
The motion was seconded by Ward 2 Regional & Local Councillor Rick Malboeuf. It was approved unanimously by members of Council.
Milton Mayor Gord Krantz will now correspond immediately with federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra and Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney, requesting that both give consideration to revising their respective related legislation, i.e., the Government of Canada’s Motor Vehicle Regulation and the Government of Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, to lower the maximum noise levels permitted for all vehicles to 85dB from 96dB as well as increase their fines for disobeying the regulations.
Mayor Krantz will also request that Ministers Alghabra and Mulroney work with all vehicle manufacturers and vehicle after-market parts manufacturers who export their products into Canada to lower the maximum noise levels permitted
for automobiles and motorcycles as soon as is reasonably possible.
Health Canada and a number of provincial jurisdictions, including Ontario, do not permit workplace maximum noise levels to exceed 85dB and advise that hearing loss can begin to occur at 70dB. CR
